I am a literacy tutor and educational writer based in Woodbury, near Exeter, supporting children, young people, and adults with literacy skills, Functional Skills English and GCSE English. I provide tailored support for learners with dyslexia, phonological processing, and auditory processing difficulties. My approach is inclusive and research-informed, with a particular focus on neurodiversity and autistic learners. Sessions are carefully structured, calm, and practical, and I work both locally in Woodbury and online across the UK.

Alongside tutoring, my research with University College London and the Anna Freud Centre has been published in peer-reviewed journals and featured in the Exmouth Journal. I have also contributed to community and creative projects, from winning photography competitions and charity fundraisers to developing “Kate Flour,” a home-baking method later featured by international author Rose Levy Beranbaum in her award-winning cookbook Rose’s Heavenly Cakes.
What I offer
- Literacy tutoring for Functional Skills English and GCSE English
- Assessment and step by step learning plans
- Support for autistic learners and other neurodivergent profiles
- Resources that make expectations clear and reduce cognitive load
- Collaboration with families, schools, and settings
Working locally
I work with learners in Woodbury and nearby areas including Lympstone, Exmouth, Topsham, and Exeter. Home visits or quiet community locations can be arranged where appropriate. Online sessions are available for flexibility.

How I work
Teaching is explicit and predictable. Tasks are broken into clear steps with visuals and worked examples. Sensory and cognitive needs are respected. Progress is tracked so learners can see what is working.
Media and Creative Projects
Over the years my work has been recognised in different ways, from research publications and press coverage to creative projects, baking collaborations, and music recordings.
Education & Research
- Exmouth Journal — Exmouth tutor’s new research to help neurodivergent students (2025). Coverage of my research with University College London and the Anna Freud Centre, exploring how small changes to admissions interviews can remove hidden barriers for autistic and neurodivergent applicants.
Creative & Community
- Exeter Daily — Photo of Exeter Quay featured in 2021 charity calendar (2020). A photo I took of Exeter Quay won a local competition and was selected for a charity calendar.
- RGB Building Supplies — Calendar raises over £3,000 for Devon & Cornwall Air Ambulance charities (2020). My photo of Exeter Quay was featured in this fundraising calendar alongside other local photographers.
- Make Some Noise — Carol of the Bells 2020 fundraiser (2020). During the pandemic, I arranged the music and wrote new lyrics for Carol of the Bells. Together with my children, I produced a video performance which raised over £760 for Global’s Make Some Noise charity appeal.
- Pebblebed Heaths Trust — The Heaths and Me community album (2020). Two of my photos were included in this local project celebrating the East Devon Pebblebed Heaths.
Food & Baking
- Rose Levy Beranbaum — “Kate Flour” on Real Baking with Rose (2009). I developed a method for home bakers to make heat-treated flour to replicate American-style bleached cake flour. Rose Levy Beranbaum featured my method in her award-winning book Rose’s Heavenly Cakes, where it became known as “Kate Flour.” She also mentioned my work again in a later Five Books interview, reflecting on the science of baking.
Music

Community life in Woodbury
Alongside my work as a literacy tutor, I take part in bellringing in Woodbury, Devon at the parish church of St Swithun. I have been proud to ring for local and national events, including:
- Ringing for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla
- Ringing for the Centenary of the WWI Armistice
- Ringing for the 70th Anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth’s Accession
Bellringing is a longstanding Woodbury village tradition and one of the ways I feel connected to the local community.
