Music for Every Learner

Inclusive Music Teaching and Curriculum Design for Children and Young People with SEND

Music for Every Learner is a practical and reflective guide to creating meaningful musical participation, progression and creative choice for children and young people with a wide range of communication, sensory, physical and cognitive needs.

Drawing together music education, psychology, autism specialism and classroom experience, the book explores how teachers can widen access while retaining musical purpose, challenge and creativity.

About the Book

Music can offer powerful opportunities for communication, expression, connection and shared experience. However, many conventional approaches to music teaching depend on spoken language, imitation, physical coordination, group participation and forms of notation that may not be accessible to every learner.

Music for Every Learner examines how these barriers can be addressed through thoughtful curriculum design, flexible teaching and a broader understanding of musical participation.

The book grew from a four-year music scheme of work developed in a specialist residential school for autistic pupils aged 3–18. It has since been expanded into a wider guide to inclusive music education, informed by my experience as a music teacher, SEND practitioner, autism specialist and educational writer.

The aim is to help educators preserve a shared musical purpose while widening the routes through which learners can listen, respond, communicate, make choices, create and perform.

What the Book Covers

Across 38 chapters, the book explores the foundations of inclusive music teaching alongside the practical development of musical knowledge and skills.

Topics include:

  • access, participation and musical agency
  • communication, interaction and shared attention
  • sensory, auditory, physical and motor access
  • sound and silence
  • pulse, rhythm and duration
  • pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture and structure
  • singing, vocalisation and the voice
  • music and movement
  • instruments and adapted instrumental access
  • visual, tactile and alternative forms of notation
  • improvisation and composition
  • music technology
  • ensemble work and performance
  • assessment, progression and curriculum design
  • age-respectful teaching and meaningful musical choice

The chapters combine educational principles, classroom examples and practical guidance that can be adapted for individual learners, small groups or whole classes.

A Flexible Approach to Inclusive Music Teaching

The book does not prescribe one fixed programme or expect every learner to progress through the same sequence in the same way.

Instead, it supports educators in identifying the musical purpose of an activity and considering different ways in which a learner might access it. Participation might involve playing an instrument, vocalising, moving, selecting a sound, directing another musician, responding through AAC or contributing through technology.

These different forms of participation can all support genuine musical thinking, communication and creative decision-making.

Throughout the book, inclusion is treated as an ongoing process of observation, adaptation and reflection. The focus remains on helping each learner develop musically while recognising that progress may be expressed in different ways.

Who Is the Book For?

Music for Every Learner is written for:

  • specialist and non-specialist music teachers
  • classroom teachers
  • SEND teachers and coordinators
  • teaching assistants and support staff
  • instrumental and vocal teachers
  • tutors and home educators
  • trainee teachers
  • music leaders working in community or alternative provision
  • practitioners supporting autistic and neurodivergent learners

It can be used across mainstream schools, specialist settings, alternative provision, further education, tutoring, home education and community music.

No specialist qualification in SEND is required. Musical terminology is explained clearly, and the practical examples are designed to be adapted to different ages, settings and levels of experience.

Meaningful Participation and Progression

Inclusive music teaching involves more than enabling a learner to remain present during a lesson. It requires opportunities to influence what happens musically.

A learner may demonstrate progression by anticipating a repeated sound, sustaining attention for longer, showing a preference, initiating an interaction, controlling an instrument more deliberately, contributing to an ensemble or making increasingly complex musical choices.

The book encourages educators to recognise these developments while continuing to build knowledge of musical concepts and support greater independence.

The emphasis throughout is on purposeful, age-respectful music-making in which learners can participate, communicate, make choices and develop as musicians.

About the Author

Kate Coldrick gained a First Class Honours degree in Music from the University of Glasgow before completing a PGCE in Secondary Music.

Her first teaching role was divided between classroom music teaching and work within the school’s SEN department. She later completed a second degree in Psychology and specialised in autism, moving from mainstream music teaching to a residential school for autistic pupils aged 3–18.

While working at the school, she developed the music scheme of work that forms the foundation of Music for Every Learner. She has continued to develop her expertise in SEND, autism, literacy and inclusive education through teaching, tutoring, educational writing and resource creation.
